Psychoanalysis Can Transform Your Life
People choose psychoanalysis because they have personality problems which are longstanding and which cause them continuing anguish. Such problems usually stem from difficulties in early childhood development. As a result, you may be a highly competent person in some ways, but feel immature in other ways. You may feel inhibited, stuck, frightened, lost, and chronically unfulfilled in some or all areas of your life. You may find yourself repeating the same self-defeating patterns over and over again. You may even have tried psychotherapy in the past and found it insufficient to alter your feelings and your life.
How Psychoanalysis Works
Much like psychotherapy, psychoanalysis consists of a dialogue between you and me. We meet four times a week on a regular basis and you lie down on my analytic couch. The increased frequency of sessions along with the use of the couch results in a continuity and intensity of experience that makes psychoanalysis a more powerful treatment than psychotherapy. A safe, trusting atmosphere helps you talk about whatever comes to mind. It also helps you re-experience with me warded-off patterns of feeling and relating which repeatedly make you suffer. Once these patterns are brought into awareness in the immediacy of the analytic relationship and understood in depth, they can be worked through and transformed. This makes way for the development of new and more effective ways of experiencing yourself and others.
Benefits of Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalysis is designed to transform your personality and your life. It offers relief from lifelong patterns of thinking, feeling and relating that cause suffering and replaces them with healthier ones. It helps you know yourself, like yourself, and achieve the freedom to be yourself. Research has shown that once an analysis is completed, you are likely to hold on to the changes you made and not need further treatment.
